All Maldives Ceremonies Are Symbolic

The Maldives does not issue marriage certificates to tourists. Every resort ceremony is symbolic only. To make it legal, you need to register your marriage in your home country before or after your trip. Many couples do a quick civil ceremony at home, then have the meaningful celebration in the Maldives.

This is actually an advantage for elopements: no paperwork, no witnesses required, no waiting period. You show up and have your ceremony.

Minute-by-Minute: What Happens on the Day

A typical elopement afternoon at a Maldives resort. Times shift based on sunset, but the sequence stays the same.

3:00 PM

Hair and makeup in villa (if arranged)

Most resorts offer in-villa styling. Book 2 weeks ahead.

4:30 PM

Photographer arrives at ceremony location

Setup shots of decorations, flowers, and venue.

5:00 PM

Couple arrives at ceremony location

Boat transfer to sandbank (10 min) or walk to beach.

5:10 PM

Ceremony begins

Celebrant reads vows. You exchange rings and sign the symbolic certificate.

5:25 PM

Ceremony ends, photos begin

Golden hour light. 30 to 45 minutes of couple portraits.

6:00 PM

Sunset champagne toast

Staff serve champagne and canapes at the ceremony location.

6:30 PM

Private dinner

Beach dinner, overwater deck, or resort restaurant. Most packages include dinner for two.

Common Questions

Can we make it legally binding?

Not in the Maldives. Register your marriage at home before or after. Many couples do a quick civil ceremony in their home country, then have the meaningful celebration in the Maldives.

Do we need witnesses?

No. Since the ceremony is symbolic, there is no legal requirement for witnesses. Resort staff can serve as witnesses if you want them in photos, but it is optional.

What if it rains on the ceremony day?

The resort will move the ceremony to a covered location or delay by 30 to 60 minutes. Rain in the Maldives is usually brief. Always discuss the backup plan when you book.

How far in advance should we book?

1 to 3 weeks minimum for the ceremony. Book the resort 2 to 6 months ahead for the best villa selection. Sunset time slots fill first.

Can we bring our own officiant?

Yes, some resorts allow it. Check with the resort first. Your officiant will need their own accommodation, which adds to the cost. Most couples use the resort celebrant.
