How a Whale Shark Excursion Works

Step by step, from boat to water to shark.

1. Boat Spotting

15 to 45 min searching

The crew drives along the outer reef edge of South Ari Atoll, scanning for whale sharks near the surface. Sharks feed on plankton in the shallow water column. Spotters stand on the dhoni roof.

2. Entering the Water

2 to 3 min to get in position

Once a shark is spotted, the boat positions ahead of its path. Guests enter the water calmly, no jumping or splashing. Fins and mask on before entry. Snorkel vest recommended for non-confident swimmers.

3. Swimming Alongside

5 to 30 min per encounter

You swim parallel to the whale shark, maintaining 3 meters distance. No touching, no blocking its path. The shark sets the pace. You follow. Guides swim with you and manage the group.

4. Multiple Encounters

Total trip: 2 to 3 hours

On a good day, the boat will find 2 to 5 different whale sharks. Between encounters, you rest on the boat. The crew provides water and snacks.

Fitness Requirements

You do not need to be an athlete. But you do need to be comfortable in the water.

Minimum Requirements

  • Able to swim 50 meters without stopping
  • Comfortable wearing a mask and snorkel
  • Can tread water for 5 minutes
  • Able to enter the water from a boat (step off the side, not a high jump)

Good to Know

  • Snorkel vests (buoyancy aids) are available and recommended for weaker swimmers
  • Whale sharks move slowly: 2 to 4 km/h. You do not need to sprint.
  • Current is usually mild along the whale shark corridor
  • Children 8+ can join at most resorts (with parents)

Which Resorts Offer Whale Shark Excursions

All four resorts access the same whale shark corridor along the outer reef of South Ari Atoll.

Resort Boat Time Cost Frequency All-Inclusive Success Rate
Lily Beach Resort & Spa 30 min boat to whale shark zone $100 to $130 per person Daily trips in season Yes 85%+ in peak season (Nov to Apr)
Constance Moofushi 25 min boat to whale shark zone $90 to $120 per person Daily trips, weather permitting Yes 80%+ in peak season
LUX* South Ari Atoll 20 min boat to whale shark zone $110 to $150 per person Daily trips, morning departures No 85%+ in peak season
Vilamendhoo Island Resort 30 min boat to whale shark zone $80 to $110 per person 3 to 5 trips per week No 80%+ in peak season

Lily Beach Resort & Spa

All-inclusive plan keeps costs predictable. Excursion boat is well-equipped. Staff brief guests on ethical guidelines before each trip.

Constance Moofushi

Smaller resort with fewer guests per trip. The marine team spots whale sharks from the dhoni and directs snorkelers. Good briefings on approach distance.

LUX* South Ari Atoll

Closest of the four to the primary whale shark corridor. LUX* collaborates with the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme. Data from sightings feeds actual science.

Vilamendhoo Island Resort

Budget-friendly option with a strong dive center. Whale shark trips are popular, so book early after check-in. The house reef alone is worth the visit.

Ethical Guidelines

The Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme sets these rules. Responsible resorts follow them. Ask before you book.

Keep 3 meters distance

Closer approaches stress the animal and cause it to dive deep, ending the encounter for everyone.

No touching

Whale sharks have a protective mucus layer. Human contact damages it and can introduce infections.

No flash photography

Flashes can startle the shark. Use natural light or a GoPro with no flash.

Do not block the shark's path

Positioning yourself in front forces the shark to change direction. Swim alongside, not ahead.

Maximum 10 snorkelers at once

Maldives regulation. Responsible resorts enforce this. Some do not.

No motorized equipment

No jet skis or drones within 15 meters. Engine noise disturbs feeding patterns.

Realistic Expectations

What to expect vs. what social media suggests.

Encounter length varies

Some encounters last 5 minutes, some last 30. The whale shark decides. If it dives, you wait for the next one. Do not expect a 30-minute swim every time.

Visibility is not always perfect

Whale sharks feed where plankton concentrates. Plankton reduces visibility. You may see the shark from 5 meters away in green water, not the crystal-clear blue of photos.

One trip might not be enough

The 80%+ success rate means roughly 1 in 5 trips sees no whale shark. Book at least two excursions during your stay. Most resorts allow rebooking at no extra charge if the first trip is unsuccessful.

Other snorkelers will be there

Multiple resort boats may arrive at the same whale shark. The 10-person limit per shark is not always enforced by all operators. Choose resorts known for responsible practices.

It is still extraordinary

Even a 5-minute encounter with a 6-meter whale shark in open ocean is one of the most powerful wildlife experiences available. The bar for "amazing" is very high here.

Month-by-Month Whale Shark Guide

Whale sharks are present year-round in South Ari. But some months are better than others.

Peak Season: November to April

  • Dry season, calmer seas, better boat conditions
  • Whale sharks feed along the outer reef consistently
  • Visibility: 15 to 30 meters (varies with plankton)
  • Multiple sharks per trip is common
  • Book excursions early; boats fill up in high season

Off-Peak: May to October

  • Wet season, rougher seas on some days
  • Whale sharks still present but less predictable
  • Fewer boats and tourists (quieter encounters)
  • Lower resort rates make the trip more affordable
  • Trips may cancel on rough weather days

What to Bring on the Excursion

🤿

Gear

  • Own mask and snorkel (better fit than rental)
  • Short fins (long freedive fins get in others' way)
  • Rash guard or wetsuit top for sun protection
  • Reef-safe sunscreen applied 30 min before
📷

Camera

  • GoPro is the standard (small, waterproof)
  • Wide-angle lens captures the full body
  • No flash (disturbs the shark)
  • Charge fully; no chance to recharge on the boat
🧴

Essentials

  • Seasickness tablets (taken 1 hour before)
  • Water bottle (boats provide some, bring extra)
  • Dry bag for phone and valuables
  • Towel (most boats provide, but bring your own)
