Seaplane Transfer: What You Need to Know
The seaplane is part of the Maldives experience, but it comes with rules.
Hours of Operation
Seaplanes fly only in daylight: roughly 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM. If your international flight lands after 3:00 PM, you will likely need one night in Male or at the airport hotel.
Baggage Allowance
20 to 25 kg per person, depending on the operator. Excess baggage is charged per kilo. Soft bags are preferred over hard suitcases as they fit the cargo hold better.
Cost
$300 to $600 per person for a return trip. Children under 2 usually fly free. Ages 2 to 11 often get a discount. The resort books this for you; it is not a separate booking.
Wait Times
Seaplane schedules are confirmed on the day. Expect 1 to 3 hours of waiting at the seaplane terminal. Resorts provide a lounge with refreshments. Bring a book.
Weather Delays
Bad visibility grounds seaplanes. During monsoon season (May to October), delays are more common. The airline will reroute or delay, not cancel. You will get there.
The View
The aerial view of the atolls is worth the cost alone. Sit on the left side for the best views on most routes. The flight itself is a highlight of the trip.
Arriving Late? Your Options
If your flight lands after dark, seaplane resorts are off the table until morning. Here is what to do.
Option 1: Speedboat Resort
Pick a speedboat resort and arrive the same night. Kurumba is 10 minutes away, Bandos is 15 minutes, and both run boats around the clock. You lose zero vacation days.
Best for: short trips, business travelers, anyone who hates waiting.
Option 2: Airport Hotel + Morning Seaplane
Stay at Hulhumale or the airport hotel (Malaafiy or similar). Catch the first seaplane in the morning. Some resorts provide a lounge at the seaplane terminal from 6:00 AM.
Best for: anyone set on a seaplane resort, or arriving after 9:00 PM.
Option 3: Split Stay
Spend your first night at a North Male speedboat resort, then seaplane out the next morning. You get two resorts in one trip and skip the airport hotel entirely.
Best for: longer trips (7+ nights), anyone wanting variety.
Option 4: Domestic Flight
Some domestic flights operate after dark. Maldivian and FlyMe serve regional airports. If your resort is near Kadhdhoo, Ifuru, or Gan, check the evening schedule.
Best for: southern atolls, Laamu, Addu.
