FIRST TIMERS

A Step-by-Step Decision Framework

Seven decisions, in order. Each one narrows your options for the next. Start at Step 1 and work through to Step 7.

Quick Answer

Start with 'should I go?' and work through season, atoll, resort, villa, meal plan, and transfer. Each choice constrains the next. Most first-timers spend 5 to 7 nights at one resort in the dry season (December to April) with a half-board or all-inclusive meal plan.

01

Should I go to the Maldives?

The Maldives suits a specific type of trip. Make sure it matches what you want before spending $3,000 to $15,000.

Yes, go

You want beach, snorkeling, diving, or a quiet couples retreat. You're okay with one resort for the whole trip.

⚠️

Maybe not

You want city exploring, cultural immersion, nightlife, or variety within a single trip. Consider Bali, Thailand, or Sri Lanka instead.

🔄

Consider a combo

Add a 3-night Maldives stay to a Sri Lanka, Dubai, or Singapore trip. Breaks up the island-only feel.

02

When should I go?

Two seasons, two very different experiences and price points.

☀️

Dec to Apr (dry season)

Best weather, lowest rain chance, highest prices. Book 6 to 9 months ahead. Peak weeks: Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year.

🌧️

May to Oct (wet season)

40 to 60% cheaper. Rain averages 2 to 3 hours per day, not all day. Best for manta rays (Jun to Oct). Some atolls get less rain than others.

⚖️

Shoulder months (Nov, Apr)

Good balance of weather and price. Transition periods with lower crowds. April can be very calm.

03

Which atoll?

The Maldives has 26 atolls. Your atoll choice determines transfer time, marine life, and resort options.

🏝️

North Male Atoll

Speedboat transfer (20 to 45 min). Most resort options. Close to airport. Good house reefs. Best for short trips or late arrivals.

🦈

South Ari Atoll

Seaplane (25 min) or domestic flight. Year-round whale sharks. Strong diving. Good range of resort tiers.

🐟

Baa Atoll (UNESCO)

Seaplane (30 min). Manta rays June to November. Protected biosphere. Fewer but high-quality resorts.

04

Which resort?

160+ resorts. Narrow by budget, transfer type, and what matters most to you.

💰

Budget ($300 to $600/night)

Older resorts, smaller islands, fewer restaurants. Still beautiful. Adaaran, Meeru, Bandos are solid picks.

💎

Mid-range ($600 to $1,200/night)

Good balance of quality and value. All-inclusive options. Lily Beach, Furaveri, Vilamendhoo.

👑

Luxury ($1,200+/night)

Private pools, butlers, fine dining, spa. Soneva, One&Only, St. Regis, Waldorf Astoria.

05

Which villa type?

The biggest single decision for your daily experience. This is where you spend most of your time.

🏖️

Beach villa

Direct sand access, more space, easier for families. Usually 20 to 30% cheaper than overwater. Vegetation gives privacy.

🌊

Overwater villa

The iconic Maldives experience. Glass floor panels, direct ocean access, sunset views. Worth the premium for a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

🏊

Pool villa (beach or overwater)

Private plunge pool adds $100 to $400/night. Worth it if you value privacy or travel with kids too young for open ocean access.

06

Which meal plan?

Food is the biggest variable cost. Get this wrong and your bill doubles.

🍳

Bed & Breakfast (BB)

Only works if your resort has affordable a la carte options. Check menu prices before booking. Expect $30 to $60 per meal.

🍽️

Half Board (HB)

Breakfast + dinner included. Good middle ground. You'll pay for lunch and drinks separately.

🥂

All-Inclusive (AI)

All meals + selected drinks + some activities. Best for budget certainty. Compare AI price vs HB + estimated extras.

07

Which transfer?

You don't always get to choose. Your resort's location determines the transfer type.

🚤

Speedboat

Resorts within 80 km of Male. Runs any time, day or night. 20 to 90 minutes. $100 to $300 round trip.

✈️

Seaplane

Resorts 80 to 300 km from Male. Daylight only (6am to 4pm). 20 to 60 minutes. $400 to $700 round trip. Luggage limit 25 kg.

🛫

Domestic flight + speedboat

Distant atolls. Fly to a regional airport, then speedboat. Runs on schedule, not daylight-dependent. $300 to $600 round trip.

Where First-Timers Get Stuck

These are the decision points where most people stall, overthink, or choose wrong.

Stuck at Step 2: Season

Many couples argue about dry season (best weather, highest price) vs. wet season (40 to 60% savings, some rain). The fear of rain kills more bookings than actual rain kills holidays.

Our take: if this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, go dry season. If you plan to return, wet season saves enough to fund a second trip.

Stuck at Step 4: Resort

160+ resorts is overwhelming. People spend weeks comparing resorts that are 90% identical. The differences that matter: house reef quality, transfer type, meal plan value, and villa position.

Our take: pick three resorts. Compare on the four factors above. Ignore the rest. They are all beautiful islands.

Stuck at Step 5: Villa

Beach vs. overwater is the most debated question. Overwater is the iconic choice but costs 20 to 40% more. Beach villas offer more space, better for families, and direct sand access.

Our take: if it is your first time and budget allows, do overwater. You came to the Maldives for this. Beach villas are great on a return visit.

Stuck at Step 6: Meal Plan

Bed & Breakfast looks cheapest until you see the a la carte prices. Half Board covers most needs. All-Inclusive removes bill anxiety but may include things you won't use.

Our take: request the resort's menu prices. Do the math for your trip length. In most cases, AI wins for stays of 5+ nights.

Planning Timeline

When to make each decision, working backwards from your travel dates.

9-12 months

Decide on season and dates

Especially important for peak season (Dec to Apr). Popular resorts sell out 6 to 9 months ahead for Christmas and New Year.

6-9 months

Choose atoll and resort

Compare 3 to 5 resorts on house reef, transfer, and meal plan. Book early for best villa selection and any early-booking discounts.

4-6 months

Book flights and confirm villa

Lock in villa category and meal plan. Book international flights. Confirm seaplane or speedboat transfer with the resort.

1-2 months

Plan activities and special requests

Book excursions, spa treatments, and special dinners. Notify the resort of any dietary needs, celebrations, or arrival time concerns.

1-2 weeks

Final checks

Confirm transfer times, check weather forecast, pack reef-safe sunscreen, download resort app if available, and print booking confirmations.

Questions We Hear Every Week

"Can I visit two resorts in one trip?"

You can, but it is expensive and time-consuming. Each resort change costs a new transfer ($200 to $700). You lose half a day to checkout, travel, and check-in. For a first trip, one resort for 5 to 7 nights is the standard recommendation.

"Do I need a visa?"

No visa required for most nationalities. You get a 30-day tourist visa on arrival for free. You need a valid passport (6+ months), a return ticket, and a hotel booking. No vaccinations required as of 2026.

"Is the Maldives safe?"

Resort islands are among the safest destinations in the world. Private islands with controlled access, 24/7 staff, and no traffic. The only real risks: sunburn, minor coral scrapes, and strong currents at certain dive sites.

"What currency should I bring?"

US dollars. Everything at resorts is priced in USD. Credit cards accepted everywhere. Bring some small bills ($1 and $5) for tips. No need to exchange to Maldivian Rufiyaa unless visiting local islands.
