Baa Atoll
Located just north of the Kaashidhoo-Kandhoo channel, the Baa Atoll is an administrative division that consists of three separate natural atolls; the southern Maalhosmadulu Atoll, the Fasduthere Atoll, and the smaller Goifulhafehendhu Atoll. This administrative division is comprised of 75 islands. It houses 16 resorts as well as 46 guesthouses.
In 2011, the Baa Atoll was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It boasts one of the largest groups of coral reefs and is home to globally significant biodiversity. These coral reefs support a high diversity of reef animals. Hundreds of coral species, thousands of reef and reef-associated fish species, marine turtles, manta rays, magnificent whale sharks, and seabirds. This includes endangered species such as the green turtle, hawksbill turtle, Napoleon wrasses and the tawny nurse shark.
Marine marvels are an integral part of the Maldivian experience. Holidaying in the Baa Atoll gives guests unfiltered access to Hanifaru Bay, the atoll's protected marine park. From May to November, it comes alive with plankton, which attracts the majestic manta rays and whale sharks to feed and play in the turquoise waters. The numerous dive centres provide prime access to the biosphere reserve, allowing guests to get up close and personal to the largest manta ray gathering in the world.
