Haa Alif Atoll
The Haa Alif Atoll is the northernmost atoll of the Maldives. It is also known as North Thiladhunmathi Atoll or Thilandhunmathi Uthuruburi among locals.
The atoll's 43 islands are spread over two natural geographical atolls; Northern Thiladhunmathi and Ihavandhippolhu. The western side is formed by one large barrier reef, with several patches of coral in the lagoon.
As the channels on the northern and western sides of the atoll are wider and shallower with weaker currents, it is ideal for beginner and less experienced divers. Exploring the overhang, you will find a ton of marine life. From manta rays and lionfish to lobsters and pufferfish, the waters are full of life all year round. Popular dive sites include the Filladhoo Wreck, the Feydhoo Faru, Sirru Falhu Hulhangu and Theefaridhoo Thila.
History enthusiasts will be thrilled to explore the famous shrine at Matheerah. In the past, it was visited by people from far and wide. The island of Utheemu is also historically significant, as the Utheemu Ganduvaru was the childhood residence of Sultan Mohamed Thakrufaanu, famed for fighting against the Portuguese in the 16th century.
