Raa Atoll

The waters of the Raa Atoll (also known as the Northern Maalhosmadulu Atoll) are teeming with life year-round. Its western fringe comprises a series of irregularly placed round or oval reefs, a feature unique to the larger northern atolls. The centre of the atoll is heavily dotted with patches of both submerged and awash coral. With 11 resorts and just two guesthouses, the atoll remains virtually untouched by the chaos of populous cities. The resorts' house reefs are full of life, making the atoll an excellent place to spot both reef and pelagic species. You can expect to see various species of vibrant fish, like butterflyfish, parrotfish, fusiliers, and surgeonfish. Additionally, the more sandy, flat areas of the reef house mantis shrimp and colourful octopi. Not far from the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Raa Atoll is rich and diversified in marine life. The most popular dive spots include the Reethi Thila and Fenfushi Giri in the south. During the southwest monsoon, the area around the island Vandhoo is frequented by manta rays. Vaadhoo, one of the inhabited islands, is the best spot to observe the mesmerizing glowing waves caused by bioluminescent phytoplankton. This magical 'Sea of Stars' usually comes as a pleasant surprise in late summer.
