WELLNESS
Digital Detox
Structured programs versus just being remote. Which resorts offer real disconnection, and how long guests actually last.
Structured Detox Programs
Three resorts with actual programs, not just slow WiFi.
Gili Lankanfushi
No News, No Shoes : Full stay (encouraged)
Device Policy
Voluntary device surrender at check-in. Phones stored in a safe. Alarm clocks provided. Guests receive a printed newsletter instead of news apps.
WiFi
Available but guests are encouraged to disconnect. No WiFi in some villa categories by design.
What Fills Your Time
Reef exploration, sandbank excursions, journaling, yoga at sunrise, cooking with local chefs. The idea is to fill screen time with presence.
Not enforced. Nobody forces you. Most guests retrieve their phones within 48 hours. The ones who last the full stay report it as life-changing.
Six Senses Laamu
Digital Wellness : 3, 5, or 7 days
Device Policy
Guided reduction. Day one: awareness of usage. Day two: set boundaries. Day three onward: structured phone-free periods. Not full surrender.
WiFi
Full WiFi available. The program is about intentional use, not forced deprivation.
What Fills Your Time
Sleep analysis, breathing exercises, ocean meditation, nature walks, journaling prompts. Screen-time tracking provided.
More practical than extreme. You learn to manage screen time, not eliminate it. Better for people who need to stay somewhat connected for work.
Soneva Fushi
Slow Life : Flexible (self-directed)
Device Policy
No formal device policy. The resort's philosophy encourages disconnection through environment: barefoot living, no TVs in villas (on request), nature-focused activities.
WiFi
Available everywhere, but the programming is designed to make you forget about it. Cinema under the stars, star-gazing with a telescope, organic garden tours.
What Fills Your Time
Astronomy sessions, glassblowing, chocolate making, coral restoration, night snorkeling. So many offline activities that most guests naturally reduce screen time.
Not a structured detox. Works for people who disconnect when given interesting alternatives. Does not work if you need external structure to put the phone down.
WiFi Reality Check
| Category | Where | Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Genuinely limited WiFi | Some smaller guesthouses on local islands. Not by design; the infrastructure is just limited. | If you want forced disconnection, a local island guesthouse on a remote atoll provides it naturally. |
| WiFi available, programs exist | Gili Lankanfushi, Six Senses Laamu, Soneva Fushi, JOALI BEING | WiFi works. The programs provide motivation and structure, not physical barriers. |
| Full connectivity everywhere | Most 5-star resorts (Waldorf, St. Regis, Four Seasons, etc.) | High-speed WiFi in every villa. Some offer digital wellness consultations but no structured programs. |
Want a genuine disconnect?
We can recommend the right resort based on how strict you want your detox to be. From gentle reduction to full surrender.
The Anxiety of Going Offline
Every concern and how to handle it practically.
Work emergencies
Leave an emergency contact number with your hotel reception. They can reach you by in-room phone or by sending someone to your villa. Set up an auto-reply email before surrendering your phone.
Children at home
Give your caretaker the resort's front desk number. Ask reception to patch calls through to your villa. You do not need a smartphone for this.
Flight changes
Your resort tracks your departure transfers. Any flight changes will be communicated to you through reception. Airlines also call emergency contacts.
Missing photos
Bring a standalone camera. Or request a disposable waterproof camera from the resort gift shop. Photos taken on a dedicated camera often turn out better than phone photos anyway.
Boredom without a phone
The first 4-6 hours are the hardest. After that, most guests report noticing their surroundings more vividly. Bring a book. The resort library is usually excellent.
How Long Guests Typically Last
~30%
Under 6 hours
Check phone 'just once' and do not put it back. No judgment; the habit is strong.
~35%
1-2 days
Make it through the first night. Retrieve phone for photos or a specific task, then stay connected.
~20%
3-5 days
The sweet spot. Long enough to feel the benefits. Most report better sleep by day 3.
~15%
Full stay (7+ days)
Complete disconnection. These guests describe the experience as one of the highlights of their life.
How to Prepare
Set Up Auto-Replies
Email, Slack, messaging apps. Let people know you will be unreachable and give them an alternative contact.
Bring Offline Entertainment
Books, a journal, a waterproof camera, playing cards. Download music and podcasts before you go (for the transfer).
Agree with Your Partner
Both of you need to commit. If one person is scrolling while the other is detoxing, it does not work.
