Best for Beginners
Calm water, shallow entry, and short swim distances. These reefs are safe for first-time snorkelers and children.
Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon
North Ari Atoll
Walk-in entry from the jetty. Zero swim distance. Step off the stairs and the reef is right there. The single easiest reef access in the Maldives. Children and non-swimmers can snorkel by holding the jetty railing.
Furaveri Island Resort
Raa Atoll
Shallow lagoon allows wading to the reef edge. Gentle slope, no sudden drop-offs near shore. Current is consistently mild. Few other snorkelers means calm, uncrowded conditions. Staff provide guided snorkeling for beginners.
Baros Maldives
North Male Atoll
Very short wade to the reef. Mild current year-round. The marine biologist leads daily guided snorkeling sessions. Excellent visibility in the lagoon. Safe conditions combined with an A+ reef make this ideal for beginners who still want to see spectacular marine life.
Lily Beach Resort & Spa
South Ari Atoll
Calm lagoon with mild current. Children's snorkeling gear available. The all-inclusive plan means families can snorkel multiple times daily without worrying about excursion costs. Overwater villa steps lead directly to shallow water.

Best for Experienced Snorkelers
Stronger currents, deeper drop-offs, and richer biodiversity. These reefs reward confident swimmers with bigger marine life encounters.
Filitheyo Island Resort
Faafu Atoll, Grade: A
Remote location in Faafu Atoll means untouched reef with rare species. The north side has a swim-through cave at 8 meters. Moderate currents bring larger pelagics. Fewer tourists mean pristine conditions.
Swim distance: 10-20m
Current: Moderate
Species: Very High, including rare macro life
Vilamendhoo Island Resort
South Ari Atoll, Grade: A
The reef drop-off is close to shore, attracting large marine life. Whale sharks pass through the South Ari channel. The east side has stronger currents that bring grey reef sharks and barracuda. Experienced snorkelers can follow the reef wall for long distances.
Swim distance: 5-15m
Current: Mild to Moderate
Species: High, whale sharks in season
Thudufushi Island Resort
South Ari Atoll, Grade: A
Small island, so you can snorkel the entire perimeter in one session. The east side reef wall drops steeply, attracting eagle rays and reef sharks. Strong swimmers can ride the mild current along the south wall for a drift snorkel.
Swim distance: 5-10m
Current: Mild to Moderate
Species: High, turtles daily
Angaga Island Resort
South Ari Atoll, Grade: B+
Tiny island surrounded by reef. The western reef has the most action, with eagle rays, reef sharks, and large schools of jackfish. Moderate currents on the outer reef. The small island size means every villa is close to good snorkeling.
Swim distance: 10-20m
Current: Mild to Moderate
Species: Moderate, pelagics on west side
How We Rate House Reefs
Our grades combine five factors. A resort can score well on species but poorly on access, so we weight them equally.
| Grade | Swim Distance | Coral Health | Species |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | Under 10m, easy entry | Excellent coverage, minimal bleaching | Sharks, turtles, rays seen daily |
| A | 5-20m, clear entry | Good coverage, healthy growth | Good variety, regular large sightings |
| B+ | 10-30m, may need fins | Recovering, patchy in places | Moderate variety, occasional large fish |
| C-D | 30m+ or boat access only | Sandy, minimal reef structure | Limited; snorkeling is not the draw |
