Catch and Release Ethics

The Maldives marine ecosystem depends on healthy fish populations. Responsible fishing keeps these waters productive.

Standard Practice

  • All billfish (marlin, sailfish) are catch-and-release only
  • Circle hooks reduce injury. Most charters now use them
  • Quick photos, then back in the water. Minimize air time
  • GT over 20 kg: release is strongly encouraged

Tackle: Bring or Rent?

  • Resort dhonis: basic trolling gear provided (40-80 lb class)
  • Private charters: premium tackle included (Penn, Shimano)
  • Bring your own: popping rods, favourite lures, light jigging gear
  • Airlines allow rods as checked baggage (rod tubes recommended)

Best Atolls for Big Game Fishing

North Male Atoll

Marlin, sailfish, wahoo

Deep water drops off quickly outside the atoll. 20-minute boat ride from any resort reaches blue water. The best access for billfish in the Maldives.

South Ari Atoll

Yellowfin tuna, GT, dogtooth

Rich channel edges with strong currents. Tuna school along the outer reef. GT patrol the channel mouths at dawn and dusk.

Laamu Atoll

GT popping, jigging

Less fished than northern atolls. Six Senses Laamu offers organized trips. The outer reef produces trophy-size GT regularly.

Gaafu Atoll

Remote fishing, mixed species

The deepest atoll in the Maldives. Minimal fishing pressure. Access via domestic flight to Kaadedhdhoo. Best for dedicated multi-day charters.

Practical Tips

What to Bring

  • Sun protection: hat, long-sleeve shirt, high SPF sunscreen
  • Polarized sunglasses (reduce glare, spot fish on the surface)
  • Favourite lures if you have them (popping, jigging)
  • Rod tube for checked airline baggage
  • Motion sickness medication if prone to seasickness
  • Waterproof camera or phone case for trophy photos

Good to Know

  • Most resort trips depart at 6 AM or 2 PM
  • Half-day trips are 4-5 hours. Full day is 8-10 hours
  • Crew provides water, snacks, and basic lunch on full-day trips
  • Tipping the crew: $20-$50 per trip is standard
  • Book at least 2 days in advance during peak season
  • Weather can cancel trips. Flexible scheduling helps
