Liveaboard vs Resort

Which Wins, by Sport

Your primary activity determines the best format. Here is how each sport scores.

Scuba Diving

Winner: Liveaboard

Liveaboards move between atolls. You dive 3-4 times per day at different sites. Remote thilas and channels that no resort can reach. The best dive sites in the Maldives (Fotteyo, Miyaru Kandu) are only accessible from liveaboards or distant resorts.

Liveaboard (9/10)

3-4 dives/day, remote sites, mobility between atolls, nitrox standard

Resort (7/10)

House reef access, unlimited shore diving, comfort between dives

Surfing

Winner: Liveaboard

Outer atoll breaks have zero crowds. A surf charter moves with the swell. You surf 2-3 breaks per day. Resort surfing is limited to nearby breaks, which get crowded in North Male Atoll during peak season.

Liveaboard (8/10)

Empty lineups, mobility to chase swell, multiple breaks per day

Resort (6/10)

Comfort, surf guides, partner activities, no seasickness

Snorkeling

Winner: Resort

Resorts with A+ house reefs give you unlimited snorkeling. Walk off the beach and you are on the reef. Liveaboards focus on dive sites, and snorkelers often wait on the boat. Resorts also offer guided snorkeling excursions with marine biologists.

Liveaboard (5/10)

Access to remote reefs, variety of sites

Resort (9/10)

House reef access anytime, guided excursions, comfort, no waiting

Fishing

Winner: Dedicated Charter

Neither standard liveaboards nor resorts are optimized for fishing. A dedicated fishing charter with proper tackle, a captain who knows the spots, and the flexibility to follow the fish is the best option. Resort fishing trips are casual; liveaboard fishing is an afterthought.

Liveaboard (6/10)

Can anchor at productive spots, some offer fishing add-ons

Resort (6/10)

Convenient booking, casual night fishing, cook your catch

Freediving

Winner: Resort

Freediving requires calm, controlled conditions and repeated access to the same training spot. Resorts with resident instructors and calm lagoons are better for learning. Experienced freedivers may prefer liveaboards for variety, but training is easier from a resort base.

Liveaboard (6/10)

Variety of sites, deep walls for depth training

Resort (8/10)

Consistent training spot, calm lagoon, instructor access, safety

Cost Comparison

Liveaboards are all-inclusive by default. Resort pricing is room-only, with activities billed separately. The true cost is often closer than it first appears.

Category Liveaboard Resort Notes
Budget $150-$250/night (shared cabin) $100-$200/night (guesthouse or 3-star) Liveaboard includes meals and activities. Resort price is room only.
Mid-range $250-$400/night $200-$500/night Liveaboard: all meals, 3 dives/day. Resort: add $50-$100/day for diving.
Premium $400-$700/night $500-$2,000/night Premium liveaboards rival resort comfort. Resort price varies wildly by brand.

Traveling with Partners or Family

When Liveaboard Works

  • Both partners are divers or surfers
  • No young children (most boats have a 10+ age minimum)
  • You both handle boat motion well
  • You want maximum dive time, minimum resort amenities
  • Budget-conscious: liveaboard diving is cheaper per dive

When Resort Works

  • One partner dives, the other wants spa and beach
  • Traveling with children (kids clubs, pools, beach)
  • Motion sickness is a concern
  • You want dining variety and evening entertainment
  • You want to combine diving with other activities

The Hybrid Option: Split Your Trip

You do not have to choose one or the other. Many travelers split their trip: liveaboard first, resort second.

7-Night Dive Trip

  • 4 nights liveaboard (remote atolls, 12+ dives)
  • 3 nights resort (house reef, spa, beach)
  • Liveaboard first: end at a resort for the no-fly day
  • Total cost: $2,500-$5,000 per person

10-Night Surf Trip

  • 5 nights surf charter (outer atoll breaks)
  • 5 nights surf resort (Kandooma or Hudhuranfushi)
  • Charter first for empty waves, resort for comfort
  • Total cost: $2,000-$4,000 per person

Couple Compromise

  • 3 nights liveaboard together (both enjoy diving)
  • 4 nights luxury resort (spa, beach, dining)
  • Both partners get what they want
  • Total cost: $3,000-$8,000 per couple

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Booking a liveaboard for your honeymoon

Unless both of you are dedicated divers, a liveaboard cabin is not a romantic setting. Small cabin, shared dining, early wake-ups. Save the liveaboard for a dedicated dive trip. Book a resort for the honeymoon.

Underestimating seasickness

Liveaboards cross open water between atolls. Channel crossings can be rough, especially during monsoon transitions (Mar-Apr, Oct-Nov). If you get seasick easily, bring medication and consider a resort instead.

Assuming all liveaboards are the same

Quality varies enormously. Budget boats ($150/night) have basic cabins and simple food. Premium boats ($500+/night) rival resort comfort with en-suite cabins, sun decks, and chef-prepared meals. Read reviews carefully.

Not checking the dive itinerary

Some liveaboards run the same route every week. Ask which atolls you will visit and which sites you will dive. A northern route (North Male to Baa) is different from a southern route (Ari to Vaavu). Match the route to what you want to see.
