ADVENTURE
Freediving in the Maldives
Warm water, no wetsuit, 30m+ visibility. One of the best places in the world to learn and practice freediving.
Why the Maldives for Freediving
Warm Water
28-30°C year-round. No wetsuit means less weight, less drag, longer breath hold. Your body stays relaxed in warm water, which is the foundation of good freediving.
Clear Visibility
30m+ visibility on most days. You can see the bottom before you start your descent. Line training feels safe when you can see everything around you.
Marine Life
Mantas, whale sharks, reef sharks, turtles. Freediving gives you quiet, bubble-free encounters. Animals stay calmer around freedivers than scuba divers.
Freediving Courses

Marine Encounters for Freedivers

Manta Rays
Depth: 5-15m
Freedivers can get closer than scuba divers; no bubbles to spook them
Where: Baa Atoll (Hanifaru Bay), Ari Atoll channels
Whale Sharks
Depth: Surface to 10m
Snorkeling-depth encounters. Freediving skills help you keep pace
Where: South Ari Atoll (year-round)
Reef Sharks
Depth: 10-20m
Grey reef sharks and whitetips common on channel dives
Where: Channel entrances, most atolls
Turtles
Depth: 3-15m
Hawksbill and green turtles. Relaxed around quiet freedivers
Where: House reefs, cleaning stations
Eagle Rays
Depth: 5-20m
Often in groups of 3-8. Best seen during current changes
Where: Sandy channels, atoll edges
Dolphins
Depth: Surface
Spinner dolphins in large pods. Freediving lets you swim alongside briefly
Where: Open water between atolls
Practical Tips
What to Bring
- Low-volume freediving mask (not a scuba mask)
- Long bi-fins or monofin if you have them
- Freediving computer or depth watch
- Nose clip for static training
- 1-2mm wetsuit optional (sun protection only)
Good to Know
- No 24-hour flying restriction (unlike scuba diving)
- Most resorts do not have dedicated freediving gear for rent
- Bring your own fins; resort snorkel fins are too short
- Book courses in advance; instructors have limited availability
- Current can be strong in channels; always dive with a buddy
Training Progression
Beginner (0-15m)
First course (Level 1/Wave 1). Focus on relaxation, breathing techniques, and equalization. Lagoon training. You will reach 10-15m by the end of a 2-day course. Enough depth for most marine encounters.
Intermediate (15-30m)
Second course (Level 2/Wave 2). Deeper equalization techniques (Frenzel). Longer breath holds. Open water training on drop-offs. You begin to move comfortably on the reef and can keep pace with marine life.
Advanced (30m+)
Third course and beyond. Mouthfill equalization, free immersion, constant weight. Deep wall dives along atoll edges. At this level, the Maldives offers some of the best deep freediving conditions in the world.
A Typical Freediving Day
What a training day looks like at a resort with a resident instructor. Times vary by resort and course level.
Light breakfast. Avoid heavy food before depth training. Hydrate well.
Theory session. Breathing physiology, equalization technique, or safety protocols.
Warm-up stretching and dry equalization practice. Relaxation breathing exercises.
Open water session. Line training on a drop-off or reef edge. Depth dives with instructor safety.
Session ends. Lunch and rest. Afternoon is free for snorkeling, beach, or spa.
Optional afternoon fun dive. No line, no training. Explore the house reef as a freediver.
