Season Guide

The SW monsoon (March to October) drives consistent swells to the eastern sides of atolls. This is the primary surf season.

March to June

Early season, building swells

  • Swells start arriving in March from the southern Indian Ocean
  • Lighter winds early in the season. Cleaner wave faces
  • April and May: consistent 3-6 ft days
  • Fewer surfers than peak season. Better value on resorts

July to October

Peak season, biggest swells

  • Largest swells of the year. 4-8 ft regularly, 10 ft+ on big days
  • Stronger winds can make conditions choppy in the afternoon
  • Dawn patrol is critical for clean conditions
  • North Male breaks get crowded. Outer atolls stay empty

Logistics

Board transport

Seaplanes accept boards up to 7'0" (bag surcharge $30-$50). Speedboat transfers: no size limit. Domestic flights: check with airline, most allow up to 7'6". Bring a padded board bag.

Reef boots

Required at every break. Sharp coral reef bottom. Bring your own; resort shops rarely stock good ones. 3mm reef boots with hard soles recommended.

Liveaboard vs resort

Liveaboards access outer atoll breaks with zero crowds. Resorts are more comfortable but limited to nearby breaks. Serious surfers typically do one liveaboard trip, then return to a resort.

Board rental

Most surf resorts rent boards ($30-$50/day). Selection is limited. Bring your own if you are particular about your board. Shortboards and fish shapes work best.

Crowd levels

North Male breaks (Sultans, Chickens): crowded in peak season. Outer atolls: empty. Laamu and Thaa: 2-5 surfers maximum. The further south, the fewer surfers.

Budget Option: Guesthouse Surfing

You do not need a resort to surf the Maldives. Local islands near the breaks offer guesthouses from $50-$100 per night.

Thulusdhoo

North Male Atoll

  • Closest island to Chickens and Cokes
  • Guesthouses from $50/night
  • Boat transfer to breaks: $15-$25/trip
  • Surf shops and board rental available
  • Speedboat from Male: 45 minutes

Hinmafushi

North Male Atoll

  • Access to Jailbreak (beginner-friendly)
  • Guesthouses from $40/night
  • Quieter than Thulusdhoo
  • Good for learning and longboarding
  • Speedboat from Male: 30 minutes

Thanburudhoo (Riptides)

South Male Atoll

  • Access to Sultans and Honkeys
  • Small island with a few guesthouses
  • Very close to the breaks (5-minute boat ride)
  • Less developed than Thulusdhoo
  • Best for dedicated surfers

Where to Surf by Skill Level

Beginner

  • Jailbreak: forgiving reef, gentle right
  • Kandooma with Tropicsurf instructor
  • Avoid Chickens, Blue Bowls, Refugees
  • Reef boots mandatory. Falls will happen
  • A surf guide makes reef surfing much safer

Intermediate

  • Sultans: long, peeling right. The best wave for progression
  • Cokes: mellow right at Thulusdhoo
  • Yin Yang: fun A-frame with both directions
  • Laamu breaks with Six Senses guide
  • Start early for clean conditions

Advanced

  • Chickens: fast, hollow left. Board-breaker
  • Blue Bowls: shallow right barrel
  • Refugees: outer atoll, heavy left barrel
  • COMO Maalifushi: remote, empty, serious waves
  • Liveaboard for outer atolls with zero crowds
