Wind Seasons

Two monsoons drive the wind. NE monsoon (December to February) is the prime kite season with strong, steady winds.

NE Monsoon (Iruvai)

December to February

Wind: 20-35 knots (NE to ENE)

Consistency: Very steady

Kite size: 7-10m

Best for: Experienced riders, wave riding, speed

Strong, reliable winds. Flat lagoons on the western side of atolls. Some days too strong for beginners. The prime kite season.

SW Monsoon (Hulhangu)

May to October

Wind: 15-22 knots (SW to SSW)

Consistency: Variable, gusty

Kite size: 10-14m

Best for: Beginners, learning, light wind foiling

Lighter winds with rain showers that shift direction. Good for learning because gusts are manageable. Foil kites extend rideable days.

Transition (shoulder)

March-April, November

Wind: 10-18 knots (Variable)

Consistency: Unpredictable

Kite size: 12-17m or foil

Best for: Foiling, light wind sessions

Wind drops between monsoons. Not reliable for kitesurfing unless you foil. Good time for other activities as backup.

Kiting on Empty Sandbanks

The defining experience of kitesurfing in the Maldives. A boat drops you on a sandbank with your gear. You kite alone on turquoise flatwater. No one else in sight.

How It Works

  • Kite center arranges a dhoni to a nearby sandbank
  • Shallow, flat water over sand in every direction
  • Set up on the sand, launch from ankle-deep water
  • Boat stays nearby for safety and gear transport
  • Session lasts 2-3 hours. Return to resort for lunch

Why It Matters

  • No obstacles, no other kiters, no boats to worry about
  • Perfect for beginners: safe crash zone everywhere
  • Advanced riders: flat water for tricks, no chop
  • Water is warm and waist-deep. Walk back if needed
  • The backdrop: white sand, turquoise water, empty horizon

Bring Your Own or Rent?

Bring Your Own

  • Airlines allow kite gear as sports equipment (extra baggage fee)
  • Bring 2-3 kites to cover the wind range (7m, 10m, 12m for NE season)
  • Bring a foil if you ride light wind. Foil rentals are rare
  • Board bag protects everything. Check airline policies in advance

Rent at the Resort

  • Saves baggage hassle. Travel light
  • Gear is usually recent models (1-2 years old)

Common Questions

Can I learn to kite in the Maldives?

Yes. Flat, warm, waist-deep lagoons over sand make the Maldives one of the safest places to learn. IKO-certified instructors at dedicated centers. Most people reach independent riding in 3-5 days of lessons.

What if there is no wind during my trip?

It happens, especially during transition months (Mar-Apr, Nov). Have backup activities planned: snorkeling, diving, island hopping. Foil kites can extend rideable conditions to lighter winds. Choose December to February for the most reliable wind.

Are there sharks in the lagoon?

Baby blacktip reef sharks are common in shallow lagoons. They are small (under 1 meter), harmless, and avoid humans. No recorded kite-related shark incidents in the Maldives. The sharks are a feature, not a risk.

Can my non-kiting partner enjoy the trip?

All kite resorts are full-service resorts. Spa, restaurants, house reef snorkeling, excursions. Your partner will not be bored. This is a Maldives holiday that happens to have great kiting, not a kite camp.
