What to Shoot at Each Resort

Signature subjects and what makes each location photographically distinct.

Baros Maldives

North Male Atoll

A+

Fluo diving (fluorescent night diving) produces otherworldly images. House reef has nudibranchs, frogfish, and mantis shrimp. The dive center supports underwater photographers with rinse stations and gear storage. Classic overwater villa shots from every angle.

Six Senses Laamu

Laamu Atoll

A+

Reef sharks and sea turtles on the house reef. Laamu Atoll is less visited, so marine life is less skittish. Dramatic overwater restaurant setting. The island itself is lush with tall palms, creating strong composition lines. Manta season June to October.

Planning a photo trip?

We can coordinate drone permits, confirm camera facilities, and match you with resorts that have the subjects you want to shoot.

Light in the Maldives

Equatorial light is consistent year-round. Plan your shoots around these windows.

Morning Light

Blue hour 5:30 AM
Sunrise 5:50 to 6:10 AM (year-round, minimal variation)
Golden hour ends ~6:40 AM

Evening Light

Golden hour starts ~5:25 PM
Sunset 5:55 to 6:15 PM (year-round, minimal variation)
Blue hour ~6:30 PM

The Maldives sits near the equator, so sunrise and sunset times barely change across seasons. Days are always close to 12 hours. Plan shoots around these consistent windows.

Equipment Logistics

Getting camera gear to a Maldives resort requires planning. Here is what you need to know.

Seaplane Weight Limits

Most seaplanes allow 20 kg checked luggage and 5 kg carry-on. Camera gear counts toward this. Pack your housing, lenses, and strobes in carry-on (fragile items). Use a lightweight tripod. Request excess baggage in advance if needed (costs $5 to $10 per kg).

Speedboat Transfers

No weight restriction issues on speedboats. Your gear travels with you in the cabin. Protect from spray with dry bags. Speedboat resorts (Baros, Bandos, Kurumba) are easiest for heavy camera setups.

Humidity Protection

Maldives humidity sits at 75 to 85% year-round. Silica gel packets in camera bags are essential. Let gear acclimatize before opening cases (condensation risk). Store cameras in air-conditioned rooms when not in use.

Underwater Gear

Camera rinse stations are available at Baros, Six Senses Laamu, and Anantara Kihavah. Other resorts have basic freshwater rinse. Bring your own Allen keys and O-ring grease. Check housing O-rings daily in tropical heat.

Drone Rules

Drone permits are required in the Maldives. Your resort must request permission from the Civil Aviation Authority on your behalf. Allow 5 to 7 working days for approval. Some resorts handle this routinely; others do not. Always confirm before you travel.

Charging and Power

Maldives uses UK-style three-pin plugs (Type G). Bring adapters and a power strip. Most villas have limited outlets. Charge all batteries overnight. Solar power banks are useful for day trips to sandbanks.

Packing Strategy for 20 kg Seaplane Limit

Carry-On (5 kg, fragile)

  • Camera body + primary lens
  • Underwater housing (if small enough)
  • Laptop or tablet for backup
  • Memory cards and batteries (no lithium in checked)

Checked (20 kg limit)

  • Strobes and arms (heaviest items, pad well)
  • Tripod (lightweight travel version)
  • Additional lenses in padded cases
  • Clothes (pack light; resort life is casual)

Tip: Speedboat resorts (Baros, Bandos) have no luggage restrictions. If you are carrying 30+ kg of gear, choose a speedboat transfer resort.
