FOOD AND DRINK
Floating Breakfast
The most Instagrammed meal in the Maldives. Here is what it actually costs, tastes like, and whether to bother.
The Honest Take
Before spending $200, here is what you should know.
Why It Is Worth It
- The photos are genuinely spectacular if the pool and tray are good.
- It feels indulgent and special on a honeymoon or anniversary.
- At the best resorts, the food is a proper cooked breakfast, not just fruit.
- You eat in your private pool with no other guests around.
Why It Might Not Be
- Food gets cold fast. You are in water trying to eat from a floating tray.
- Wind pushes the tray away. You spend time holding it in place.
- Most couples do it once for the photo, then go to the restaurant for real breakfast.
- At cheaper resorts, the tray is underwhelming and the food is basic.
Best Resorts for Floating Breakfast
These three get it right: good food, proper tray, large enough pool.

One of the best in the Maldives. The tray is sturdy, the food is hot, and the pool is large enough that the tray does not dominate the space.

Large woven tray, well-balanced, stays stable
Included
Freshly cooked eggs (your choice), pastries baked that morning, fresh tropical fruit, juice, coffee, yogurt, granola

Good quality food, large enough pool. The reef below the pool is a nice backdrop. Popular for Instagram but also genuinely enjoyable.

Baros does most things well and this is no exception. Pool is smaller than some, but the food quality compensates. Good for couples who want it without overpaying.

Water villa plunge pool
Tray
Elegant wooden tray, compact but well-stocked
Included
Eggs, pastries, fruit, juice, coffee, cheese selection, smoked salmon option

Common Disappointments
What goes wrong at the wrong resort.
Cheap plastic tray
Some mid-range resorts use lightweight plastic trays that tip easily. Food slides. The tray looks nothing like the marketing photos. Ask to see the actual tray before booking.
Lukewarm food
Food is prepared in the main kitchen and carried to your villa. If it is a long walk or boat ride, eggs arrive cold and pastries are stale. Resorts where villas are far from the kitchen have this issue.
Pool too small
Plunge pools that are 2 meters across leave no room for both the tray and two people. The tray takes up half the pool. You sit on the edge holding the tray steady while your partner takes photos.
Mostly fruit and pastry
Some resorts fill the tray with decorative fruit and a few croissants. No cooked food. No eggs. It looks full in photos but there is not much to eat. Always ask if hot food is included.
Cost Breakdown by Resort Tier
| Category | Price per Couple | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Budget resorts | $80-$120 | Basic tray, continental items. Often no cooked food. Small pool. |
| Mid-range resorts | $120-$200 | Better tray, some cooked items. Quality varies widely. |
| Luxury resorts | $200-$300 | Full cooked breakfast, premium tray, large pool, butler service. |
| Included in plan | $0 extra | Some all-inclusive and premium plans include floating breakfast. Ask before booking. |
Tips for the Best Experience
Time It Right
Book for 7-8am when the light is golden and the wind is usually calm. Midday sun makes the pool uncomfortably hot.
Photo First, Eat Second
Take all your photos in the first five minutes while the food looks fresh and the tray is stable. Then eat.
Ask in Advance
Ask to see the tray and menu before paying. Confirm hot food is included. Request the tray setup for calm mornings only.
