FIRST TIMERS

Reef Health in 2026

The 2016 bleaching event damaged roughly 70% of Maldivian coral. Ten years later, recovery varies by atoll. Here is the current state.

Quick Answer

Reefs are recovering but not fully restored. Baa, Lhaviyani, and Raa atolls are in the best shape (30 to 50% coral cover). North Male is patchy. South Ari's draw is whale sharks, not coral. If reef quality matters most, choose your atoll based on recovery data, not resort branding.

What Happened in 2016

The Bleaching Event

  • El Nino raised Indian Ocean temperatures by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius above normal.
  • Sustained heat from March to May 2016 caused mass coral bleaching across all atolls.
  • Roughly 60 to 70% of shallow coral (above 15m) died. Deeper coral survived better.
  • Branching corals (Acropora) were hit hardest. Massive corals (Porites) survived better.

Recovery Since Then

  • New coral growth began within 1 to 2 years on dead structures.
  • Fast-growing species recovered first. Slower-growing table corals are still rebuilding.
  • Fish populations bounced back faster than coral, thanks to remaining reef structure.
  • A smaller bleaching event in 2020 slowed recovery in some areas, particularly shallow reefs.

Recovery Status by Atoll

Coral cover percentages are estimates based on marine surveys and resort reports. Conditions vary within each atoll.

Baa Atoll (UNESCO Biosphere)

Good 30-50% cover

UNESCO protection since 2011 has helped. Hanifaru Bay is healthy. Outer reefs have strong new growth. Tabletop corals returning in protected areas. Some inner reefs still patchy.

Best Sites

Hanifaru Bay (mantas, snorkel only), Dharavandhoo Thila, Nelivaru Haa

Snorkel Expectations

Healthy reef sections with good fish life. Mantas June to October. Coral gardens visible in shallow areas. Some dead patches remain between live sections.

South Ari Atoll

Moderate 20-40% cover

Mixed recovery. Outer reef walls recovered faster than shallow areas. Whale shark habitat is unrelated to coral (they feed on plankton). Good fish populations despite coral damage. New coral recruits growing on dead structures.

Best Sites

Maamigili beyru (whale sharks), Kudarah Thila, Broken Rock, Rangali Madivaru

Snorkel Expectations

Whale sharks are the draw here, not coral. House reefs vary by resort. Fish life is good. Coral is regrowing but not yet matching pre-2016 levels.

North Male Atoll

Variable 15-40% cover

Most visited atoll. Recovery is patchy: some house reefs (Baros, Bandos) are doing well because of active protection. Other areas suffered repeated bleaching in 2016 and 2020. Current-swept channels have the healthiest reef.

Best Sites

Banana Reef, HP Reef, Maldives Victory wreck, Baros house reef

Snorkel Expectations

Resort house reefs vary widely. Baros and Bandos are among the best. Others have sandy lagoons with minimal coral. Always check reef ratings before booking.

Lhaviyani Atoll

Good 30-45% cover

Less tourism pressure. Good natural recovery. Fushifaru Thila is one of the healthiest reef sites in the country. Fewer resorts means less anchor damage and diver impact.

Best Sites

Fushifaru Thila, Shipyard (wreck), Kuredu Express (channel dive)

Snorkel Expectations

Among the better atolls for reef snorkeling in 2026. Good coral cover, healthy fish populations. Less crowded dive and snorkel sites.

Raa Atoll

Good 25-45% cover

Fewer resorts, lower human impact. Natural recovery proceeding well. Some sites have excellent new branching coral growth. Macro life (nudibranchs, pipefish) thriving on recovering reef.

Best Sites

Local thilas, Furaveri house reef, Raa Atoll channel sites

Snorkel Expectations

Good house reefs at resorts like Furaveri. Healthy fish populations. Coral gardens regrowing. Less touristy feel than central atolls.

Vaavu Atoll

Moderate-Good 25-40% cover

Famous for channel diving. Strong currents keep reef healthy by bringing nutrients and flushing warm water. Fotteyo Kandu remains one of the world's best channel dives. Soft corals thriving.

Best Sites

Fotteyo Kandu, Miyaru Kandu, Devana Kandu

Snorkel Expectations

Channel sites are for divers, not snorkelers (strong currents). Inner reef snorkeling is moderate. Best for experienced divers, not snorkel-focused trips.

What "Reef Restoration" Actually Means

Many resorts advertise reef restoration. Here is what the main programs involve and how guests can participate.

Coral frame nurseries

How It Works

Metal frames seeded with coral fragments. Placed in shallow water. Takes 1 to 3 years for visible growth.

Where

Baros, Anantara Dhigu, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, Reefscapers program

Guest Participation

Some resorts let guests 'adopt' a coral frame ($50 to $300). You get photo updates as it grows.

Reef clean-up dives

How It Works

Organized dives to remove debris, fishing line, and ghost nets from reef areas. Prevents coral damage from entanglement.

Where

Most dive center resorts offer periodic clean-up events.

Guest Participation

Open to certified divers. Ask your dive center about scheduled clean-ups during your stay.

Marine biologist programs

How It Works

In-house marine biologists monitor reef health, track species, and educate guests. Some run citizen science snorkel surveys.

Where

Six Senses Laamu, Soneva Fushi, Gili Lankanfushi, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru

Guest Participation

Join guided reef walks, manta ID sessions, or turtle monitoring. Often free for guests.

What Snorkelers Can Expect in 2026

Setting realistic expectations for what you will see underwater.

You Will See

  • Abundant reef fish at most house reefs (butterflyfish, parrotfish, triggerfish)
  • Turtles at resorts with strong reef (Baros, Ellaidhoo, Vilamendhoo)
  • Baby reef sharks in shallow lagoons
  • New coral growth on old structures, especially branching and plate corals
  • Mantas at Baa Atoll (June to October)
  • Whale sharks at South Ari (year-round, best Jan to Apr)
⚠️

Manage Expectations

  • Some areas are still mostly dead coral rubble with sparse new growth
  • Pre-2016 photos show reefs that no longer look like that
  • Shallow areas (above 5m) were hit hardest and are slowest to recover
  • Visibility varies: 15 to 40m depending on tide, season, and weather
  • Not every resort has good snorkeling. Check reef ratings before booking.
  • Seagrass beds are healthy and important, but less photogenic than coral gardens

How Visitors Can Help Reef Recovery

Small actions by guests make a real difference over thousands of visitors per year.

Use reef-safe sunscreen

Oxybenzone and octinoxate kill coral. Use mineral-based (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) sunscreen. Many resorts sell reef-safe options. Apply 15 minutes before entering the water so it absorbs.

Do not touch or stand on coral

Even light contact kills coral polyps. Wear a snorkel vest for buoyancy. Keep fins above the reef. If you need to rest, find a sandy area.

Choose resorts with active programs

Resorts that employ marine biologists and run coral nurseries are investing in the reef. Your booking supports that work directly.

Report what you see

If you notice bleached coral (white patches), ghost nets, or unusual marine behavior, tell the resort's marine biologist. Guest reports are part of monitoring.

Skip fish feeding

Some resorts offer fish feeding from overwater decks. This changes fish behavior and attracts aggressive species. Natural feeding patterns are healthier for the reef.

Adopt a coral frame

$50 to $300 at participating resorts. You get a metal frame with coral fragments planted in your name. Photo updates as it grows over months and years.
