Manta ray in the Maldives

Resort comparison

Best Maldives resorts for divers

A practical shortlist — by atoll, dive-centre brand, and what's actually within boat range. Plus the season windows that decide whether you'll see whale sharks, mantas, or both.

Updated

A note on the information below. Resort details, dive-centre policies, nitrox availability, costs, and dive-site access can change. The shortlist reflects what we know as of May 2026, but please confirm specifics with us at the time of booking. We've also dropped the made-up "house reef A+/A/B" grades that used to be on this page — they weren't an industry standard, just our scoring.

The diving brief

Where you stay decides what you dive

The Maldives is one of the world's best dive destinations — but "the Maldives" is 26 atolls and 1,000+ islands, and which atoll your resort sits in decides which marine life you'll see and which dive sites are realistically within boat range.

Three short rules: South Ari for year-round whale sharks · Baa Atoll for manta season (June–November) · North Malé for channel dives and wreck diving close to the airport. The resort shortlist further down maps to these atolls.

Pick the atoll first

Dive site access by atoll

Each atoll has a different character. Choose the atoll that matches what you want to see; the resort shortlist follows.

Channel dives, wreck diving

North Malé Atoll

Closest to Malé. Strong currents in channels bring big pelagics. Multiple dive sites within 10–20 minutes by boat. Best for divers with limited time who don't want long transfers.

Whale sharks, varied reef diving

South Ari Atoll

The only Maldivian atoll with reliable year-round whale shark sightings — sharks patrol the outer reef edge. Swim-alongside encounters, not feeding interactions.

Season
Whale sharks year-round (most reliable Jan–Apr)
Resorts
Lily Beach, Vilamendhoo, Ellaidhoo (in adjacent North Ari)

Manta rays

Baa Atoll (UNESCO Biosphere)

Hanifaru Bay is one of the largest known manta feeding stations in the world — gatherings of 100+ mantas in a single feeding event are documented during peak season. Snorkeling only inside Hanifaru (no diving) to protect the animals.

Top sites
Hanifaru Bay, Nelivaru Haa, Dhonfanu Thila, Dharavandhoo Thila
Season
Mantas: June–November (peak August–October)
Resorts
Reethi Beach, Soneva Fushi, Finolhu

Channel dives, sharks

Among the best channel diving in the Maldives. Strong currents, grey reef sharks, dramatic overhangs. Most often accessed via liveaboard rather than resort stay.

Top sites
Fotteyo Kandu, Miyaru Kandu (shark channel), Devana Kandu
Season
Year-round (best Jan–Apr for east side)
Resorts
Few resort options; commonly accessed via liveaboard

Common questions

About diving in the Maldives

What's the best Maldives atoll for divers?

+

It depends on what you want to see. North Malé suits divers with limited time — Banana Reef, HP Reef, and the Maldives Victory wreck are all within 10–20 minutes by boat. South Ari is the only atoll with reliable year-round whale shark sightings. Baa Atoll (UNESCO Biosphere) is the global benchmark for manta rays from June to November. Vaavu offers the best channel diving but is mostly accessed via liveaboard.

Can you dive at Hanifaru Bay in the Maldives?

+

No — Hanifaru Bay is snorkel-only. Diving is prohibited inside the marine protected area to avoid disturbing manta and whale shark aggregations. Visit window: June to November (peak August to October). Snorkel slots are managed by the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve authority; resorts in Baa Atoll (Reethi Beach, Soneva Fushi, Finolhu) handle the permits and boat trip.

How much does diving cost in the Maldives?

+

Indicative on-resort prices (2026): single boat dive $60–$90; 10-dive package $450–$700; nitrox fill $8–$15 per tank; equipment rental $25–$40 per day; PADI Open Water certification $500–$800. Costs vary meaningfully by resort tier — confirm at the time of booking.

How long should I wait between diving and flying in the Maldives?

+

DAN guidelines: 18 hours after a single no-decompression dive; 24 hours after multiple dives or any decompression dives. Critical: seaplane transfers count as flying. Plan your last dive accordingly — no diving in the 24 hours before your seaplane out.

Where is the nearest recompression chamber in the Maldives?

+

Bandos Maldives operates the only fully-staffed recompression chamber easily reachable from most resort areas, ~20 minutes by speedboat from Malé. Solo divers with cover and DAN insurance should be familiar with the evacuation protocol before the trip.

Is nitrox available at all Maldives resort dive centres?

+

Most established resort dive centres offer nitrox fills — but availability and price vary. Confirm at the time of booking if nitrox is important to your trip. PADI 5-Star centres (e.g. Baros, Bandos) reliably offer it.

What's the water temperature and visibility in the Maldives?

+

Water temperature: 27–30°C year-round. Visibility: 15–40 metres, varying by season and current. December–April typically gives the best visibility; June–November can be slightly reduced but coincides with peak plankton activity that draws mantas and whale sharks.
