Maldives liveaboard diving

follow the mantas, not a fixed reef

Summer is manta season. A liveaboard through Baa and North Ari puts divers and non-divers in the water with the Maldives' biggest animals, the way a single resort reef never can.

Updated

Quick answer

A Maldives liveaboard is the strongest way to dive and snorkel the country's big-animal season. From May to November, peak July to October, mantas and whale sharks gather to feed on the eastern atolls, and the world's largest manta aggregation happens at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll. A summer liveaboard through Baa and North Ari reaches these sites a fixed resort can't. Crucially, Hanifaru is snorkelling-only, so divers and non-divers can travel together and both see the mantas. A week typically costs $1,800 to $4,500 per person, with group and full-boat charter options. Every trip is quoted with taxes and transfers itemised.

Why summer, why a boat. The best Maldives marine encounters happen in the southwest monsoon, when everyone chasing a beach holiday stays away. A boat can move with the tides and the plankton, so you dive where the animals actually are that day, not wherever your resort happens to sit.

Who it's for

Three ways to dive a liveaboard

The same boat works for very different travellers. Tell us which one you are and we'll build the trip around it.

Certified divers

You dive, you want the big animals

Up to 17 dives a week across Baa and North Ari, channels, pinnacles and manta cleaning stations, timed for peak aggregation season. Tell us your certification level and logged dives.

Couples & non-divers

One dives, one snorkels, same boat

Hanifaru Bay is snorkelling-only, so non-divers get the headline manta experience too. Perfect when one of you dives and one doesn't: you travel together and see the same animals.

Dive clubs & groups

Book cabins, or the whole boat

Groups get the most out of a liveaboard: shared dive planning, cabins allocated together, and full-boat charter options for clubs. We handle rooming, dietary needs and mixed diver / non-diver numbers as one quote.

Tell us about your dive trip

Certification level and logged dives, how many divers vs non-divers, your dates, and whether you want cabins together or the whole boat. The more we know, the sharper the quote.

Common questions

Maldives liveaboard diving, what to know

When is the best time for a Maldives liveaboard? +
For big-animal diving and snorkelling, the southwest monsoon (May to November) is the standout window. This is manta season, when currents push plankton to the eastern atolls and mantas and whale sharks gather to feed. The largest aggregations at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll usually happen July to October. The dry season (December to April) has calmer seas and better visibility but fewer of the summer aggregations. For the classic Baa / North Ari manta route, book a summer departure.
Do I need to be a certified diver for a liveaboard? +
No. The headline experience on the Baa route, the Hanifaru Bay manta and whale shark aggregation, is snorkelling-only for everyone, because scuba is banned inside the bay to protect the animals. That means non-divers and couples where only one person dives can join the same trip and still get the best of it. Certified divers add up to 17 guided scuba dives around the snorkel excursions.
How much does a Maldives liveaboard cost? +
A week-long Maldives liveaboard typically runs $1,800 to $4,500 per person depending on the boat, cabin type, season and how much diving is included. Groups and full-boat charters change the maths. Our current summer offer is up to 30% off. Enquire and we'll confirm the live cabin price for your date.
Liveaboard or dive resort, which is better for diving? +
A liveaboard follows the marine life across atolls, so you reach more (and often better) dive sites than a single resort house reef, and it wins for serious divers and for aggregation season. A resort wins if you want a spa, pool, kids' club and a fixed base, or if a week living aboard a boat isn't for you. See our liveaboard vs resort comparison for the full breakdown.
Can a group or dive club book together? +
Yes, groups are where liveaboards shine. You can book double / twin cabins together or charter the whole boat for a club. We allocate cabins by group, handle mixed diver and non-diver numbers, dietary needs and dive planning, and quote it as one price. Enquire early for full-boat dates in summer.
Are manta and whale shark sightings guaranteed? +
No, aggregations are seasonal and weather-dependent, and no responsible operator guarantees sightings. What we can do is put you in the right place at the right time: the Baa / North Ari route in the July–October peak gives you the strongest odds of the big encounters.
