Maldives transfer costs

seaplane, speedboat & domestic flights

The transfer fee nobody mentions before booking — how it works, what it roughly costs by resort, and why your seaplane is the resort's job, not yours.

Updated

Written and kept current by IM's Maldives-based transfers team, who arrange seaplane and speedboat transfers for guests every week.

Quick answer

Maldives airport transfers are charged per person, round trip, and are usually separate from the room rate. A shared speedboat (resorts near Malé) runs roughly $100–$490 round trip per person. A shared seaplane (resorts further out) runs roughly $400–$820. A domestic flight plus speedboat (far-south resorts) runs roughly $350–$520. For a couple that adds $200–$1,600 — often the biggest surprise on the final bill.

Before you pay

Not sure if your transfer is included?

Send the quote in chat. IM will check the transfer type, return cost, child pricing, and whether your international flight timing works with the resort transfer window.

A note on the prices below. Costs shown are indicative round-trip-per-person ranges and are subject to change by season, resort, and current offers. For confirmed pricing on your travel dates, reach out to IM or your travel agent.

How it works

Three types of transfer

Your resort's location determines which transfer you take — it isn't a choice you make. All three are arranged by the resort; IM coordinates them as part of your booking.

Shared speedboat

For resorts within roughly 80 km of Malé airport. Runs 24/7. Takes 10–90 minutes.

From ~$100–$490 pp, round trip

Best value. Works for night arrivals.

Shared seaplane

For resorts 80–250 km from Malé. Daylight only (6am–4pm). Operated by Trans Maldivian Airways or Manta Air.

From ~$400–$820 pp, round trip

No night flights. Late arrivals may need an airport hotel.

Domestic flight + speedboat

For far-south resorts. A scheduled flight to a regional airport, then a speedboat to the resort.

From ~$350–$520 pp, round trip

Fixed schedule. Fewer daily flights.

Speedboat transfer costs

Indicative round-trip cost per person. Resorts sorted by distance from Velana International Airport.

Resort Transfer Type Approx. Time Typical Cost (RT, pp)
Kurumba Maldives Shared speedboat 10 min From $100–150 RT
Bandos Maldives Shared speedboat 15 min From $120–180 RT
Baros Maldives Shared speedboat 25 min From $180–260 RT

Anantara Dhigu Shared speedboat 35 min From $250–370 RT
Centara Grand Island Shared speedboat 75 min From $350–490 RT

RT = round trip, per person. Children aged 2–11 typically 30–40% less; infants under 2 usually free. Costs shown are indicative round-trip-per-person ranges and are subject to change by season, resort, and current offers. For confirmed pricing on your travel dates, reach out to IM or your travel agent.

Seaplane transfer costs

Indicative round-trip cost per person. Seaplanes operate daylight hours only — roughly 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Soneva Jani Shared seaplane 40 min From $600–800 RT Noonu Atoll
St. Regis Vommuli Shared seaplane 40 min From $600–820 RT Dhaalu Atoll

RT = round trip, per person. Children aged 2–11 typically 30–40% less. Costs shown are indicative round-trip-per-person ranges and are subject to change by season, resort, and current offers. For confirmed pricing on your travel dates, reach out to IM or your travel agent.

You don't book the seaplane yourself

Seaplane transfers are arranged by the resort — not booked by you. The resort schedules your flight, handles your luggage, and meets you at the dedicated seaplane lounge at Velana airport. The transfer cost appears on your resort invoice; you never deal with the seaplane operator directly. IM coordinates all of this as part of your booking — you simply arrive at Velana and you're looked after from there.

Who flies you

The seaplane operators

Three carriers fly the Maldives' seaplane routes. You don't pick one; your resort's contracted operator does. But it helps to know who you're boarding.

Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA)

The giant. TMA runs the world's largest seaplane operation, with a fleet of around 67 de Havilland Twin Otters and more than 300 flights a day. It serves the majority of seaplane resorts, so it is most likely the aircraft you board.

Manta Air

The newcomer, flying seaplanes since 2019. Manta Air brought newer cabins and a more app-friendly experience to the market, and its resort network is growing steadily across the central atolls.

Maldivian (Island Aviation)

The national carrier. Maldivian runs a smaller seaplane fleet alongside the domestic flights that reach the far-south atolls, so you may meet it on either leg of a domestic-flight transfer.

Seaplane flight time by atoll

Roughly how long the seaplane leg takes from Velana, by atoll. Closer resorts (within about 80 km of Malé) use a speedboat instead.

Atoll Approx. seaplane flight time
North Malé Atoll 10–15 min
South Ari Atoll 20–30 min
Baa Atoll 30–35 min
Noonu & Lhaviyani 45–60 min
Far northern atolls 60–70 min

Good to know

Before you fly: baggage, timing and weather

Baggage allowance

About 25kg per passenger on a seaplane (roughly 20kg checked plus 5kg hand), a single bag capped near 32kg, and excess at around $5 per kg. Soft bags are easier than hard cases, and some aircraft take surfboards up to about 7 feet.

Booking window and timing

The resort arranges your seaplane once it has your flight details, usually 48 to 120 hours ahead. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so your international flight generally needs to land by about 3:00 PM for a same-day transfer.

Weather and reliability

Seaplanes are weather-dependent, and the southwest monsoon (May to October) brings more delays and the occasional cancellation. Build a little buffer into tight connections and keep essentials in your hand luggage.

From our transfers team

What actually happens when you land

We arrange these transfers for guests every week, so here is the real flow. You clear immigration at Velana, and a resort or seaplane representative is waiting for you by name in the arrivals hall. Your checked bags are tagged and taken, and you are walked to the dedicated seaplane lounge to wait for your flight. You never queue at an operator desk or handle the booking yourself.

The part that trips people up is timing. If your international flight lands after about 3:00 PM, the seaplane window has usually closed, and a seaplane resort will overnight you at an airport-area hotel and fly you across first thing the next morning. It is normal, but it is a night and a cost most people don't plan for.

This is where booking through a Maldives-based team earns its keep. Before you travel we line your international arrival up against the resort's seaplane window, confirm the transfer and its cost in writing, and if an overnight is unavoidable we arrange the airport hotel and the morning flight so nothing stalls at Velana. It is the difference between a smooth arrival and a scramble at the terminal.

Domestic flight + speedboat transfers

For far-south resorts. The cost covers the domestic flight and the speedboat on to the resort.

Resort Transfer Type Approx. Time Typical Cost (RT, pp)
Six Senses Laamu Domestic flight + speedboat ~2 hrs From $350–480 RT
Amari Havodda Domestic flight + speedboat ~2 hrs From $350–470 RT
Shangri-La Villingili Domestic flight + speedboat ~2.5 hrs From $400–520 RT

RT = round trip, per person. Costs shown are indicative round-trip-per-person ranges and are subject to change by season, resort, and current offers. For confirmed pricing on your travel dates, reach out to IM or your travel agent.

Travelling as a group?

IM holds partner agreements with Maldives seaplane and speedboat operators. If you're travelling as a group, or for a wedding, send us your travel details and we'll arrange a private charter — so your whole party arrives together, on your own schedule, rather than waiting on the shared transfer timetable.

Transfer cost impact — per couple

Indicative round-trip cost for two adults — what you add to your room total.

Shared speedboat (near Malé)

$200–$1,000

For 2 adults, round trip

Shared seaplane

$800–$1,600

For 2 adults, round trip

Domestic flight + speedboat

$700–$1,000

For 2 adults, round trip

Budget transfer options

For travellers staying on Hulhumalé or a local island rather than a resort.

Destination Method Notes
Hulhumalé hotels Airport bus / taxi $2–5 taxi ride from the airport
Maafushi guesthouses Public ferry $2 ferry (slow, 2+ hrs) or shared speedboat $25–35

Seaplane timing — important

  • Seaplanes only fly during daylight: roughly 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
  • If your international flight lands after 3:00 PM, you will likely need an airport hotel overnight ($80–$150).
  • The last seaplane departure is typically 3:30 PM, with check-in at the lounge 1 hour before.
  • On departure day your seaplane reaches Malé 1–2 hours before your international flight. IM plans this for you.

Common questions

Maldives transfers — what to know

How much does a Maldives airport transfer cost? +
Round-trip per-person transfer costs in the Maldives are roughly $100–$490 for a shared speedboat (resorts within 80 km of Malé), $400–$820 for a shared seaplane (resorts further out), and $350–$520 for a domestic flight plus speedboat (far-south resorts). For a couple, that adds roughly $200–$1,600 to the trip. Exact cost depends on the resort, the season, and whether the transfer is shared or private — we confirm it on your quote.
Do I need to book my own seaplane transfer? +
No. Seaplane transfers are arranged by the resort, not booked by you. The resort schedules the flight, handles your luggage, and meets you at the dedicated seaplane lounge at Velana airport. The cost appears on your resort invoice. When you book through IM, we coordinate the entire transfer — you simply arrive at Velana and you're looked after from there.
Are transfers included in the room rate? +
Usually not. Most Maldives resorts quote the room rate separately from the transfer, and the transfer is one of the biggest surprises on a final bill. Some resorts include transfers in special offers or longer-stay packages. Every IM package states clearly whether the transfer is included — and if it isn't, we quote it up front so there's no surprise.
Why can't I take a seaplane at night? +
Seaplanes in the Maldives operate in daylight only — roughly 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM — because they land on open water and need visibility. If your international flight arrives after about 3:00 PM, you'll likely overnight at an airport-area hotel ($80–$150) and fly to the resort the next morning. Speedboat resorts don't have this restriction; they run 24/7.
Do children pay full price for transfers? +
No. Children aged roughly 2–11 typically receive a 30–40% discount on transfers, and infants under 2 are usually free or heavily reduced. Exact child pricing varies by resort and transfer operator — we confirm it per resort on your quote.
How much are transfers for a family of four? +
For a family of four (2 adults + 2 children) round trip, expect roughly $300–$1,000 for a near-Malé shared speedboat resort, and $1,400–$2,400 for a seaplane resort, with the child discount applied. Transfers are often the single largest add-on for families choosing a seaplane resort — for budget-conscious families, a speedboat resort close to Malé materially lowers the total.
What's the difference between a shared and a private transfer? +
A shared transfer runs on the resort's schedule alongside other guests — it's the standard, and what the ranges on this page reflect. A private speedboat or charter is exclusive to your party, runs on your timing, and costs considerably more. Most guests take the shared transfer; private is worth considering for very late arrivals or special occasions. We'll price both if you'd like to compare.
Can IM arrange private charter transfers for groups or weddings? +
Yes. IM holds partner agreements with Maldives seaplane and speedboat operators, and arranges private charters for groups, wedding parties, and guests who want to travel on their own schedule. A private charter means your party flies or sails exclusively — no shared timetable, no waiting. Send us your group size, dates, and resort, and we'll quote the charter alongside the standard shared transfer so you can compare.
Which airlines operate Maldives seaplanes? +
Three carriers fly the seaplane routes. Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) is the largest by far, with a fleet of around 67 Twin Otters and 300-plus flights a day, so it serves most resorts. Manta Air, flying seaplanes since 2019, has newer cabins and a growing network. Maldivian, the national carrier, runs a smaller seaplane fleet plus the domestic flights that reach the far south. You don't choose the operator; your resort's contract decides it.
How long is the seaplane flight to my resort? +
It depends on the atoll. North Malé Atoll is about 10 to 15 minutes, South Ari 20 to 30, Baa 30 to 35, Noonu and Lhaviyani 45 to 60, and the far northern atolls 60 to 70 minutes. Seaplanes typically serve resorts between roughly 80 and 250 km from Malé; closer resorts use a speedboat instead.
What is the seaplane baggage allowance? +
The standard seaplane allowance is about 25kg per passenger (roughly 20kg checked plus 5kg hand luggage), with a single bag usually capped near 32kg and excess charged at around $5 per kg. Soft bags travel better than hard cases, and some aircraft take surfboards up to about 7 feet. Keep medication, valuables and a change of clothes in your hand luggage in case a bag follows on a later flight.
How far ahead is my transfer arranged? +
Your resort arranges the seaplane once it has your flight details, usually 48 to 120 hours before arrival. The key thing to confirm is timing: because seaplanes fly in daylight only, your international flight generally needs to land by about 3:00 PM for a same-day seaplane. Land later and you overnight near the airport and fly across the next morning. When you book through IM we check this against your flights up front, so it is never a surprise at Velana.
