How to Get to the Maldives From the USA: Flights, Airlines and Costs (2026 to 2027)

By IM Maldives·08 Jul 2026·8 min read

The Maldives is one of the longest trips an American can take, and also one of the most worth it. There are no direct flights from the United States, so every route involves one stop, usually in the Gulf or Istanbul, then a short hop into Malé. Total travel time runs roughly 19 to 24 hours. Here is exactly how to get there, which airlines are best, what it costs, and how to think about the whole trip rather than just the flight.

The short answer

There are no nonstop flights between the US and the Maldives. You connect once through Doha, Dubai or Istanbul, then take a short second flight into Velana International Airport (MLE) near Malé. From the East Coast, plan on about 19 to 21 hours. From the West Coast, closer to 24. The three airlines worth your time are Qatar Airways, Emirates and Turkish Airlines.

The best airlines from the US

All three fly from multiple US cities to their home hub, then onward to Malé, usually on one ticket with your bags checked through.

Qatar Airways, via Doha

Often the smoothest option. Qatar flies from around a dozen US cities including New York, Washington, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, into Doha, then a 4 to 4.5 hour hop to Malé. From New York the whole trip runs about 21 hours with a short layover. Doha's Hamad airport is modern and quick to transit, and Qatar's Qsuite business class is a favourite for the long first leg.

Emirates, via Dubai

Very similar timing to Qatar. Emirates serves cities like New York, Newark, Washington, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, connecting in Dubai before the roughly 4 hour flight to Malé. New York to Malé is again about 21 hours. Dubai is a big but efficient hub, and Emirates makes it easy to add a Dubai stopover if you want to break the journey.

Turkish Airlines, via Istanbul

A strong option for East Coast travellers who want a different routing. Turkish flies from many US cities into Istanbul. The catch is the second leg: Istanbul to Malé is around 8.5 hours, longer than the Gulf hops, so total time lands near 22 hours. The upside is Istanbul as a stopover city and, on longer layovers, Turkish's complimentary city tours. Check current eligibility when you book.

Etihad, via Abu Dhabi, is a solid fourth option with timings close to Qatar and Emirates if the schedule or price suits you better.

Flight time by where you live

East Coast cities such as New York, Boston, Washington and Miami run about 19 to 22 hours total via the Gulf. Central cities like Chicago, Dallas and Houston add an hour or two. West Coast cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle are around 24 hours, since the first leg to the Gulf is close to 16 hours. Whichever coast you fly from, it is a full day of travel, so it is worth arriving before any seaplane transfer, which only runs in daylight.

What flights cost, and when to book

Economy round-trip fares from the US to Malé usually run about $900 to $1,600 per person. Deals dip toward $800, and November is often the cheapest month. Prices climb over the December holidays and again in July, when they can pass $2,000. As a rule of thumb, booking around 8 to 10 weeks ahead tends to land the best economy fares. Business class is a different world, often $4,000 to $7,000 or more round-trip, which is why the long haul tempts so many people to splurge.

What the whole trip actually costs

The flight is only part of it. On a Maldives holiday the resort stay is usually the bigger number, and it is where a specialist saves you money. As a rough guide, for two people, seven nights, all in with your stay, meal plan, transfers and all taxes:

  • Comfortable 5-star: from around $3,500 to $5,000. Lively, good-value islands at the more accessible end of luxury.
  • Premium adults-only or water villa: about $5,000 to $7,000. For example an adults-only overwater stay at You & Me Maldives, usually with a strong meal plan included.
  • Ultra-luxury private island: from around $10,000 and up. The top of the market, private-island living and signature villas.

Across that spectrum, resorts you might be matched with include Siyam World Maldives at the accessible end, You & Me Maldives, Jumeirah Olhahali Island and Patina Maldives in the premium tier, and The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, The Nautilus Maldives and Soneva at the ultra-luxury top. These figures are indicative, discounts often apply, and we confirm exact pricing on enquiry. You can browse current packages or read up on all-inclusive meal plans and honeymoon stays to get a feel for the range.

Cut the cost with a current deal

Package prices move with the season, and there are often real savings on shoulder-season dates. A last-minute or early-bird offer can take a meaningful chunk off the stay, which is the biggest part of the trip. Airline holiday bundles vs a Maldives specialist

You will also see flight-and-hotel packages from airline brands like Emirates Holidays, and from the big online travel agents. They are convenient, one booking for flight and resort, and worth knowing about. But there are trade-offs.

Bundles sell from a limited list of resorts the operator has contracted, the matching is generic, and the hotel portion usually carries a markup. A Maldives specialist works differently. We match you to the right resort for your trip, whether that is adults-only, a honeymoon, a family island or a diving base, our contracted rates on the stay often beat the bundle's hotel price, and we handle the transfers and on-ground logistics that a call centre abroad cannot.

The one genuine advantage of a bundle is the single invoice. Our answer is simple: you book the Emirates or Qatar flight directly, sometimes cheaper than it sits inside the bundle, and we handle the entire stay and transfers as one quote. Nearly as simple, usually better value, and matched to you rather than to a contract list.

After you land: getting to your resort

Arriving at Malé is not the end of the journey. Your resort is reached by seaplane, domestic flight or speedboat depending on how far out it sits. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, so if your international flight lands in the evening you may overnight near the airport and transfer in the morning. We plan this around your arrival time so the trip does not stall at the airport. For the detail, see our guide to Maldives transfer costs.
