Real costs, the legal status nobody explains, every ceremony setting, planning timeline, and the resort decisions that actually matter. Written by the team who books these weddings every week.

Quick Answer

A Maldives wedding is one of the most photogenic destination weddings you can plan — but it's also one of the most misunderstood. The ceremonies are symbolic, not legally binding (couples typically register the marriage at home, then celebrate in the Maldives). Costs range from $8,000 for an intimate just-the-two-of-you wedding to $200,000+ for a full private-island buy-out. Every resort handles weddings differently. This guide covers what those differences are, what each tier really costs, and how to plan the trip properly.

How to read this guide. We start with the most important practical detail (legal status), then work through costs, ceremony types, resort selection, and timeline. If you only have ten minutes, scroll the "How much does a Maldives wedding cost" and "Choose the right resort" sections — those are where most couples spend money they didn't need to.

The most important detail

Maldives weddings are symbolic, not legal

The Maldives is an Islamic country. Civil marriage law recognises only Islamic marriage between Muslims who are residents. For everyone else — every tourist, every visitor, every destination-wedding couple — the ceremony at a Maldives resort is symbolic, not legally binding.

This isn't a resort-by-resort thing. It's the country's law. Every single Maldives wedding package, at every resort, produces a beautifully presented certificate that has no legal weight in your home country.

Couples typically handle this in one of three ways:

  • Legal at home, ceremony in the Maldives. Register the marriage at a registry office at home (usually a 15-minute appointment). Fly to the Maldives for the celebration with friends and family. By far the most common approach.
  • Vow renewal framing. Some couples who married quietly at home choose a vow renewal package instead of a wedding package. Same ceremony, same setting, slightly different framing — and usually slightly cheaper.
  • Civil ceremony elsewhere on the way. Some couples have a legal ceremony in Sri Lanka or Singapore en route — both recognise civil marriage and offer fast turnaround. Less common because it adds logistics.

The keepsake certificate the resort produces is presentation-grade and beautiful. It just isn't a legal document. Plan accordingly.

Mid-size wedding (20–40 guests)

$60,000 – $150,000

Larger resort, full ceremony build-out, private dining venues, full photography and videography, group transfer charters. 5–7 night party-wide stay.

Traditional destination weddings with the full guest list.

Full island buy-out (40+ guests)

$200,000+

Exclusive private-island buy-out at a resort like Soneva, Velaa, or You & Me. Total resort takeover, custom programming, multi-day celebration.

Ultra-luxury weddings, milestone celebrations, fully bespoke productions.

Why our numbers might look higher than others

Most published Maldives wedding cost articles quote the ceremony package only — the $1,500–$5,000 figure. We quote the total trip cost because that's what couples actually pay. The ceremony is 10–25% of the budget; accommodation, transfers, taxes, and meals are the rest. For a true budget, see our honeymoon cost guide with five line-by-line couple budgets.

Where you'll wed

Five ceremony settings in the Maldives

Every resort offers at least the beach option. Sandbank, overwater, and garden settings are resort-specific. The choice is more about photography and weather sensitivity than about ceremony quality.

Beach ceremony

The classic Maldives wedding — barefoot on white sand, a draped gazebo or arch, the lagoon as your backdrop. Every resort offers this; it's the most common and most photographed.

Best for groups of 2–30. Heat and sun considered — late afternoon ceremonies are most comfortable.

Sandbank ceremony

Boat transfer to a private sandbank in the middle of the lagoon. Your wedding party is the only people there. Most cinematic; most expensive logistically; weather-dependent.

Best for parties under 12. Add $1,500–$4,000 on top of the base wedding package.

Overwater ceremony

Ceremony at an overwater pavilion or villa deck. Direct lagoon views, glass-floor moments, the iconic Maldives setting. Less common — only certain resorts have suitable overwater venues.

Best for groups of 2–20. Available at Conrad, Soneva Jani, Anantara Kihavah, Niyama, others.

Garden / tropical

Inland tropical setting — palm grove, lush vegetation, more shade and less wind. Used as backup when weather threatens beach options, or as a deliberate choice for couples who prefer less sun exposure.

Best for guests with sun sensitivity. More versatile for hot afternoons.

Sunset ceremony

A timing choice rather than a venue type — any of the above settings scheduled at sunset. The Maldives sun sets between 6:00 and 6:30 PM year-round, giving consistent golden-hour ceremony timing.

Best for couples prioritising photography. Add buffer time for guest seating before light fades.

Common questions

Maldives weddings — what to know

Is a Maldives wedding legally binding? +
No. The Maldives recognises only Islamic marriage as legal. For non-Muslim couples, Maldives wedding ceremonies — at every resort, without exception — are symbolic. The certificates are beautiful, framed, and presentation-grade, but they have no legal weight in your home country. Most couples handle the legal marriage at home (typically a 15-minute registry office appointment) and treat the Maldives ceremony as the celebration with friends and family. Some couples who married quietly at home use a vow renewal package instead — same ceremony, same setting, different framing.
How much does a Maldives wedding actually cost? +
The wedding ceremony package alone runs $1,500–$5,000 per couple at most resorts before tax (call it $2,000–$6,500 after the 27% Maldives tax). On top of that you add: accommodation for the couple (typically $4,000–$15,000 for 7 nights), accommodation for guests, transfers ($400–$820 per person seaplane or $100–$490 speedboat), and the meal plan or all-inclusive add-on. For an intimate just-the-two-of-you wedding, plan on $8,000–$15,000 all-in. For a 20-guest wedding, $25,000–$60,000. For a 40+ guest wedding with island elements, $150,000+.
Which Maldives resort is best for a wedding? +
The best wedding resort depends on guest count, style, and budget. For intimate luxury and quiet privacy: Soneva Fushi, Cheval Blanc Randheli, Velaa, Vakkaru. For classic elegance with full wedding teams: Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi, Anantara Kihavah, Finolhu. For larger weddings with scale to host 30+: Siyam World, Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, Hideaway Beach. For value with strong wedding setups: Cocoon Maldives, Adaaran Prestige Vadoo, Furaveri. We match couples by guest count, atoll preference, transfer method, and the aesthetic they want.
How many guests can a Maldives wedding accommodate? +
From 2 (eloping) to 500+ (full island buy-out). Most resorts comfortably handle 30–80 guests for a destination wedding. For 40+ guests at top-tier resorts, partial or full island buy-outs are often arranged so the celebration has the island to itself. We coordinate group accommodation, group transfers, and full event programming for any party size.
When is the best time to get married in the Maldives? +
The dry season (November to April) offers the most reliable weather with clear skies and calm seas — peak wedding season runs December through April. Peak rates apply during this window. Shoulder months (April–May, October–November) offer good weather at 25–35% lower rates. Wet season (May–October) has occasional afternoon showers but rarely all-day rain, much lower prices, and is the most popular for value-focused couples. Avoid late June through early August if you have weather-sensitive guests — that's the wettest period.
Do I need a wedding planner for a Maldives wedding? +
Most Maldives resorts have an in-house wedding coordinator included with every wedding package. For weddings under 30 guests, this is typically enough — the coordinator handles ceremony setup, dining, decor, and run-of-day. For larger weddings (50+ guests), full island buy-outs, or weddings with significant custom programming (multi-day events, themed celebrations, external vendors), a destination wedding planner adds real value. IM coordinates with both resort planners and external planners depending on what your wedding needs.
Can we bring our own photographer to the Maldives? +
Yes — external photographers are welcome at all Maldives resorts, though they must have a valid tourist visa and arrive on the same flights/transfers as paid guests. Some resorts charge a small "vendor fee" ($200–$500) for external photographers working at the resort. Many couples use the resort's in-house photographer for the ceremony itself and book an external photographer (or IM Studio) for the editorial honeymoon shoot the next day.
What dress code works for a Maldives wedding? +
Light, breathable fabrics are essential — temperatures sit at 28–32°C year-round with high humidity. Brides typically wear lightweight gowns in chiffon, organza, or silk, with minimal layering. Grooms favour linen suits or stylish shirts. Guests are usually told to expect 'beach formal' — sundresses, linen trousers, and barefoot-friendly footwear. Heavy fabrics, full tuxedos, and formal heels work poorly on sand. Most experienced couples plan an outfit change after the ceremony for the reception.
Are children allowed at Maldives weddings? +
Yes, at most resorts. Family-focused resorts (Furaveri, Sun Siyam Olhuveli, Hideaway, Niyama) have kids' clubs that work well for child guests during the ceremony itself. Adults-only resorts (You & Me by Cocoon, Adaaran Prestige Vadoo, Hurawalhi) don't accept children at all. If your wedding includes children, the resort choice is partly driven by who's coming — we filter accordingly.
How early should we book a Maldives wedding? +
For peak-season weddings (December–March, Valentine's): 10–14 months out is typical. For shoulder-season: 6–9 months. For wet-season weddings with smaller guest counts: 3–6 months can work. Larger weddings (40+ guests) need more lead time because group accommodation availability is the binding constraint. Wedding coordinators' diaries fill up first — that's the limiting resource, not the resort itself.
What about a destination wedding for same-sex couples? +
Same-sex ceremonies are arranged at most Maldives resorts. The ceremony is symbolic in all cases (the Maldives doesn't recognise same-sex marriage legally, but it also doesn't recognise non-Muslim opposite-sex marriage — the legal status is the same). What differs is how welcoming individual resort teams are. The major international brand resorts (Conrad, Six Senses, St. Regis, Hilton, JW Marriott, Soneva) have hosted same-sex ceremonies regularly. We can confirm specifics per resort.
