Velana International Airport: Your Complete Arrival Guide (2026)

By IM Travel PlannerPublished 21 May 20266 min read

You have landed — or you are about to. Velana International Airport (IATA: MLE) is the gateway to every resort, every overwater villa, and every experience the Maldives has to offer. Knowing how it works before you arrive makes the difference between a smooth start and a stressful one.

This is our complete guide — updated for 2025–2026.

The New Terminal 1 — A Major Upgrade

In July 2025, Velana opened its brand new Terminal 1 — a 78,000 square metre international terminal built to handle 7.5 million passengers annually. It is the first terminal at Velana to feature jetbridges, meaning you now walk directly from the aircraft into the terminal rather than descending mobile stairs onto the tarmac.

The terminal is still in a phased rollout, with more jetbridges, dining outlets, retail, and lounges coming online progressively. Here is how the island is now divided:

  • Terminal 1 — All international arrivals and departures
  • Terminal 2 — Domestic flights only (15–20 minute walk from T1, no airside connection)
  • Seaplane Terminal — Western side of the island, operates independently

Arriving at Velana — What to Expect

Budget 75 to 90 minutes from disembarking to reaching the Arrivals Hall during peak periods. Immigration is counter-based — there are no e-gates for tourists — and officers regularly ask to see your accommodation confirmation.

Have these ready before you queue:

  • Passport
  • Return flight ticket
  • Resort or hotel booking confirmation (digital copy is fine)

Customs is strictly enforced. The following are prohibited and will be confiscated:

  • Alcohol — including duty-free purchases made abroad
  • Pork products
  • Non-Islamic religious items
  • Narcotics

Do not attempt to bring alcohol into the country. Alcohol is available at licensed resort islands once you arrive.

If your resort is more than 30–40 minutes from Malé by speedboat, you are almost certainly arriving by seaplane. This is one of the most spectacular ways to reach a resort — a 20 to 45 minute flight over the atolls at low altitude, with turquoise lagoons stretching in every direction.

What to know:

  • Seaplane check-in is now handled inside Terminal 1 in the Arrivals Hall area — a significant improvement on the previous semi-open-air setup
  • A resort representative or minibus will transfer you to the seaplane terminal, approximately a 10-minute drive to the western side of the island
  • Seaplanes operate roughly 06:00 to 15:30 for departures — they do not fly at night
  • If your international flight lands after approximately 15:00, you will not reach your resort the same day

Late arrival overnight options: Hulhulé Island Hotel (connected to the airport), hotels in Malé, or accommodation in Hulhumalé. Your travel agent should arrange this automatically if your flight lands late — if they have not, that is a gap in your booking.

At IMMaldives, late-arrival nights are always pre-arranged as part of your package. Talk to us or 💬 message us on WhatsApp to make sure your transfer is covered.

Speedboat Transfers — For Resorts in the Atolls Near Malé

Many resorts in North and South Malé Atoll are reached by speedboat — journey times range from 15 minutes to around 90 minutes depending on the property.

  • Speedboat check-in desks are at Terminal 2 — allow 10–15 minutes to walk there from T1 Arrivals, with an airport representative helping with luggage
  • Speedboats operate around the clock, so late-night arrivals are manageable
  • Your resort representative will meet you in the Arrivals Hall with a name board

Domestic Flight Connections

For resorts in remote atolls like Laamu, Addu, or Hanimaadhoo, you will connect to a domestic flight departing from Terminal 2.

Allow a minimum of 2 hours between your international arrival and domestic departure — more during peak season. The immigration queue at T1 alone can take 30–45 minutes.

Airport Lounges

Koveli Lounge — Opened September 2025 inside Terminal 1. Available to business and first class passengers. Facilities include showers, Wi-Fi, and food service. No alcohol served.

Maamahi Executive Lounge (CIP/VIP) — MACL's premium fast-track service. Includes a private immigration process with aircraft-to-lounge escort. Cost: USD 268–492 per person (2026 rates). Must be booked at least 6 hours before your flight.

Resort Private Lounges — Four Seasons, St. Regis, and Soneva operate their own private lounges at the seaplane terminal. Access is included as part of your resort transfer — another reason why resort selection matters.

Food, SIM Cards & Wi-Fi

Dining in Terminal 1 is currently limited — two small outlets with around 15 seats total. The main food options (Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut, Costa Coffee, The Coffee Club) are in the Terminal 2 area.

Alcohol is not available at the airport. The closest option is the Hulhulé Island Hotel, about 1.3 km away with a free shuttle — it has a pool, bar, and restaurant.

SIM cards: Dhiraagu and Ooredoo both have counters immediately after the arrivals exit, with instant tourist data packages. There is also a 24-hour SIM vending machine if you arrive late at night.

Wi-Fi is free throughout both terminals.

Getting to Malé or Hulhumalé

If you are spending a night in the capital before or after your resort stay:

  • Malé — Connected via the Sinamalé Bridge. Taxi takes approximately 10 minutes at a fixed fare. Ferry also runs from the Hulhulé Ferry terminal near Terminal 2.
  • Hulhumalé — 10-minute drive in the opposite direction from Malé. A wider choice of mid-range hotels, and a good option if you have an early seaplane the following morning.

Our Tips Before You Land

  • Have your accommodation confirmation on your phone — not just in email, but saved offline or in a screenshot
  • Confirm your transfer type and timing with your travel agent before you fly
  • If your flight lands after 15:00 and you have a seaplane transfer, a pre-booked overnight stay is essential
  • Allow minimum 2 hours for domestic connections, more in peak season (December–April)
  • Terminal 1 is still evolving — more retail, dining, and jetbridges are coming in 2026

A smooth arrival sets the tone for your entire trip. If you are booking with IMMaldives, all transfer logistics — seaplane timing, overnight stays, speedboat coordination — are handled as part of your package.
