What to Expect
May marks the start of the southwest monsoon. Rainfall increases sharply (averaging 14 rain days, 220mm total), though most rain falls as short afternoon thunderstorms rather than all-day downpours. Mornings are typically sunny. Sea conditions are slightly choppier; seaplane transfers may have occasional delays.
Rates drop sharply from May 1st onwards. Some seasonal-only resorts close briefly for staff training and refurbishment in early May. Hanifaru Bay (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Baa Atoll) opens for manta ray season, one of the world's premier manta encounter sites. Bring waterproof options for excursions.
