Kaafu Atoll
'Kaafu' is a code letter of the Thaana alphabet used in the Maldivian language, Dhivehi. The Kaafu Atoll is officially and traditionally known as the Malé Atoll.
Malé Atoll is the name of two natural atolls which form part of the administrative division of Kaafu Atoll. The two Malé Atolls, North Malé Atoll and South Malé Atoll are separated by the Vaadhoo Kandu. Malé, the capital of the Maldives is naturally located within the North Malé Atoll. However, it is not part of the Kaafu administrative division.
The entire Kaafu Atoll administrative division is officially named Malé Atoll as the two Malé Atolls are the main islands of the administrative district. The atoll hosts over 45 resorts and nearly 695 guesthouses.
Due to its close proximity to the Malé International Airport, it is an increasingly popular location among tourists. The vast selection of resorts and guesthouses allows guests to stay within the atoll. This saves weary travellers from having to endure lengthy domestic transfers to their island getaway.
Furthermore, the atoll houses several hotspots for diving and snorkelling. The atoll's waters are teeming with life and vibrant corals, home to barracudas, snappers, groupers and more. The Banana Reef, aptly named for its curved shape, was one of the first places to put the Maldives on the map for divers.
