The Best Time to Dive the Maldives: A Month-by-Month Guide

You can dive the Maldives every month of the year. What changes is the marine life and the visibility, and both follow the two monsoons. Pick your dates around what you most want to see.

The two seasons in short

The dry season, from December to April, brings the northeast monsoon, calmer seas and the clearest water. The wet season, from May to November, brings the southwest monsoon, a little more rain and slightly lower visibility, and the big plankton blooms that pull in the mantas and whale sharks. In other words, the clearest water and the biggest animals sit in different halves of the year.

When is manta season?

Manta season runs from May to November, and it peaks between July and October. This is when Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll comes alive, with more than a hundred mantas feeding at once on a good day, joined by whale sharks. When can you see whale sharks?

Whale sharks are the exception to the seasons. South Ari Atoll holds a resident group of juveniles all year, so a sighting is possible in any month. During manta season they also turn up at Hanifaru with the mantas. If a whale shark is top of your list, South Ari is the safer bet year-round.

Dry season or wet season?

Choose the dry season (December to April) for the calmest, clearest conditions and easier diving, which suits newer divers. Choose the wet season (May to November) for the aggregations and, often, better prices and quieter sites. Neither is wrong. It comes down to whether you are chasing visibility or big animals.
